Godshards

What is a Godshard?

A Godshard is somewhere between a demigod and a sorcerer. They are humans whose souls have merged with Shards of their fallen God; Omnitus, the Lord of All. They are among the Mortal Realms most prolific heroes, using their magical powers as well as their greater wisdom and insight to help the realms of humanity.

Despite their bluster and legendary status however, Godshards are still human. They have flaws, they can make mistakes, and not every Godshard uses their powers for good.

The Origins of the Godshards

The Godshards can trace their origins to the climax of the Second War in the Heavens. At the height of a terrible war between Gods, angyls and daemons, Omnitus, the Lord of All, clashed with his brother Tenebrous, the Lord of Darkness.

The two Brother-Gods fell down to the Mortal Realm, locked in combat. Their impact was similar to a meteor and caused a tremendous explosion of magical energy. The two Gods were shattered into thousands of Shards.

Eight centuries later, the first of these Shards came back to the Mortal Realm, entering a baby boy, who was only three days old. His name was Adam...

Common Traits

All Godshards live longer lives than regular humans. Even the least powerful ones can easily live to a century. They all have Soulsight, much like the Gods, daemons and Nephilim.

They are usually tall and fair with the height typically related to the Shard size. Their eyes will have a distinct glow, the brightness is also based on the size. They cannot have children, which has driven the Godshards to focus heavily on their deeds and legacy.

All Godshards from the tiniest Shardling to the greatest Maximus Shard wish to use their abilities to help people and their passion and drive is boundless.

Soulsight

Soulsight is a potent ability that not only Godshards have, but Gods, daemons, angyls and Nephilim as well. It is recognized by a distinct glow in the eyes, although the brightness varies greatly based on the power of the being. Through Soulsight, a being can read a person's vibes and gleam information and intentions. Soulsight is far from perfect and can be tricked, but that is not an easy task.

Some creatures have more advanced Soulsight than others, which in turn gives more passive powers. The weakest Soulsight belongs to the types of Nephilim, who can only do the aforementioned feats. Godshards have a more advanced type of Soulsight. They can use it to augment their passive abilities, as well as for telepathy to a limited degree. Daemons are even more advanced. They can discern differences in a person's being. For example while Godshards souls look the same to another Godshard, daemons can spot differences. It is the Gods however who have the most powerful Soulsight. They can read thoughts to some degree, learn about a person's entire life in a more detailed manner and can see through any lie or deception.

Shard Names

Some Godshards have two names. Particularly those who maintain relationships with their birth families such as the late bloomers. Shards insist they're called one name, often outside the conventions or even the language of their local culture. For example Adam the First is called Adam in-universe, not Adamo, which is what it would normally be for Cradlen(Italian).

These names frequently clash with what their birth families wanted to call them, usually leading to the Shard having two names. Examples include Salvatore Angelos, Salvatore being the Shard name and Angelo being the family name. For another example, the Shardling Annabelle wanted to be called Anna, but her family wanted to call her Bella so they compromised with Annabelle. An interesting variant of this is with Ruth the Uniter, who was given a second name by the Benelim later in life; Amica, Friend. While it's not a true family name, it serves a similar purpose, signifying Ruth's bond with her adoptive Benelim parents.

Other Facts

A person can become a Godshard at any time, but typically a person becomes a Shard either three days after they're born or just after they turn seven.

Most Godshards are asexual, owing to their infertility and aloofness. Notable exceptions to this rule are Ruth the Uniter and Avella Avalon.
